After You with the Pistol

After You with the Pistol"We're seduced by Charlie's wit, wordplay and disarming candor about his vanity and many appetiteshe moves from one malicious witticism or fine meal to another as he ingests vast amount of booze and exhales bon mots."
Dallas Morning News

"Bonfiglioli's marvelous creation never flags, mixing the best of Ian Fleming's 007 with P. G. Wodehouse's Bertie Wooster. Listening to Mortdecai natter onabout hangover cures, oysters and sex, the sanitized paper strips of hotel toiletsall while he escapes certain death at every corner, is one of life's great pleasures."

Kyril Bonfiglioli's wickedly fun mysteries featuring the Honorable Charlie Mortdecai degenerate aristocrat, amoral art dealer, seasoned epicurean, unwilling assassin, and general knave-about-Picadilly have been cult classics in the UK since their first publication there in the 1970s.

Charlie's back in After You with the Pistol, along with his new bride, Johanna, and his thuggish manservant, Jock. He's also still drinking too much whiskey and anything else he can get his hands on which makes it all the more difficult to figure out what the beautiful and fabulously wealthy Johanna is up to when she tries to convince Charlie to kill the Queen. Suffice it to say that Johanna is not quite what she seems. Don't miss this brilliant mixture of comedy, crime, and suspense.

While he lived, Kyril Bonfiglioli was often confused with his hero, Charlie Mordecai. A heavy drinker until his death from cirrhosis of the liver, he once said, "Drs Alka and Seltzer should have won the Nobel Prize years ago: my only quarrel with their brain-child is its noise."

Simon Prebble, a British born performer, is a stage and television actor and veteran narrator of some three hundred audio book titles. As one of AudioFile's "Golden Voices," he has received over twenty Earphones Awards. He lives in New York.

Cranford - audio book

Cranford - audio bookCranford is in possession of the Amazons; all the holders of houses, above a certain rent, are women.

Elizabeth Gaskells comic portrait of early Victorian life in a country town describes with poignant wit the uneventful lives of its lady-like inhabitants, offering an ironic commentary on the separate spheres and diverse experiences of men and women. As the external world necessarily impinges even on Cranford, the unlikely juxtapositions of old and new brought about by the pace of change are also explored: the effects of Victorian commerce and imperial expansion co-exist with the survival of customs and habits of thought from much earlier times.

This critically up-to-date edition includes Gaskells essay The Last Generation in England containing reminiscences of her childhood in Knutsford, and the comic story The Cage at Cranford as well as a lucid new introduction that discusses the originality and subtlety of Gaskells portrayal of womens experience.

Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865), novelist and biographer, was born Elizabeth Cleghorn Stevenson in London. She was reared by an aunt in Knutsford, Cheshire, which became the model for village settings in her novels. In 1832 she married William Gaskell, a Unitarian minister. Her first novel, Mary Barton, published in 1848, was immensely popular and brought her to the attention of Charles Dickens, who solicited her work for his periodical, Household Words, for which she wrote the series subsequently reprinted as Cranford. She wrote novels, short stories, and a biography, The Life of Charlotte Brontë.

Nadia May has been nominated as an AudioFile Golden Voice five years running and is a winner of thirteen AudioFile Earphones Awards. She is the co-founder of TheatreFirst, a theater company in the San Francisco Bay Area where she currently lives.

The Dharma Bums - audiobook

The Dharma BumsA vivid evocation of a part of our time. New York Post

The Dharma Bums, with its mystical, environmental, and cultural messages, is a meaningful and relevant piece. Library Journal

A poetic celebration of life.a fine, clear narration by Parker. Sound quality is excellent. KLIATT, magazine of book reviews for schools and libraries.

Two ebullient young men are engaged in a passionate search for dharma, or truth. Their major adventure is the pursuit of the Zen way, which takes them climbing into the high Sierras to seek the lesson of solitude, a lesson that has a hard time surviving their forays into the pagan groves of San Franciscos Bohemia with its marathon wine-drinking bouts, poetry jam sessions, experiments in yabyum, and similar nonascetic pastimes.

This autobiographical novel appeared just a year after the authors explosive On the Road put the Beat generation on the literary map and Kerouac on the best-seller lists. The same expansiveness, humor, and contagious zest for life that sparked the earlier novel ignites this one.

Jack Kerouac (1922-1969) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts. He attended local Catholic schools and eventually Columbia University, becoming in the 1940s and 1950s a member of what was to be called "the Beat generation." His first novel appeared in 1950, but it was On the Road (1957) that epitomized to the world the Beat philosophy.

Tom Parker, recipient of the Golden Voice award, records a remarkable variety of books while pursuing his love of theater by directing two or three professional stage productions a year in the Washington, D.C., area.

Winterton Blue - audiobook

Winterton BlueFor the last twenty years, Lewis has been haunted by his brother’s death. He’s tried hiding from it, running from it, even erasing it from his memory, but the relentless ghost of Wayne confronts him at every turn. Then he meets Anna, a young woman who is also haunted - by her mother, Rita, a vivacious spirit who, unlike Wayne, happens to be very much alive.

Rita is the exact opposite of her daughter: loud, carefree, and a daredevil. At seventy-six, she still runs a guesthouse on the coast and has a boyfriend, Vernon, a retired actor and bon vivant. Together they make a formidable pair, living life as if every day might be their last. Anna would be happy for them, if not for the memory of her late father, a reserved and careful man. Into this precarious environment of carousing, music hall turns, and cocktails, stumbles Lewis, on a quest to find the person he believes is to blame for the death of his brother. He immediately recognizes a kindred spirit in Anna, and she in him, but at first both are too headstrong to admit that they are susceptible to falling in love.

Against the backdrop of the Norfolk coast, with its massive skies and relentless seas, they finally learn to trust each other, and accept that an uncertain future can be as wild and alluring as the landscape they have grown to love.
